National Park

The Bromo volcano is part of the Indonesian National Park, the park includes three volcanoes: Bromo, Tenger, Semeru. There are many rivers, lakes and waterfalls in the park. A huge number of different plants grow, which differ, including from the height at which they are located. Various species of living creatures live here, especially many rare birds. There are also caves, temples, small villages and rice fields in the park, which are cultivated by the local population.

Traditionally, tourists climb to the top of Bromo, as it is the most accessible of all three, and observe the volcano's crater filled with sand and ash, also called the "sea of sand". More physically prepared and brave travelers can climb Semeru volcano, the highest point in Java at 3676 meters. The journey takes about three days. The volcano is considered active, it emits steam and ash. In 2020, a volcanic lava eruption occurred. In 2021, the Semeru eruption killed 13 people and burned more than 100 more.

Pura Luhur Poten Temple

Not far from the Bromo volcano is the Pura Luhur Poten Hindu temple, despite the fact that most of the inhabitants of Indonesia profess Islam, adherents of other religions are present in some territories, such as here. The local temple is relatively modestly decorated and furnished. However, every year it becomes the center of the Yadnya Kasada sacrifice festival.

Every year, on the same day, locals gather at the temple in order to appease the ancient spirits living in the depths of the volcano. According to legend, a king and queen once lived here, but they had no children. They climbed the Bromo volcano and began to ask the spirits to help them. The spirits heard their plea and agreed, but in return the couple had to sacrifice the youngest of the children to them. The king and queen had 20 heirs born before they sacrificed the youngest. In memory of this, the locals still cajole the spirits of the volcano. They bring fruits, vegetables and livestock and dump it all into the mouth.

Despite the activity of the Bromo volcano, the flow of tourists to it is endless. It is very interesting for people to look at a real volcano, to touch it. There are amazing views at the foot and on the mountain itself, somewhat reminiscent of alien ones. And for locals, tourists are a way to earn money, they offer equestrian assistance in climbing to the top or just guide services.
