Abraham Lake

Abraham is an artificial lake that appeared in Canada in 1972. This reservoir has a total area of 53.7 km2 with a maximum length of 32 km and a width of 3.3 km. The main purpose of Abraham's creation is the accumulation of spring waters for subsequent use in hydropower. Photographers and outdoor enthusiasts can watch on the shoreline of the reservoir. But Abraham Lake is very popular, primarily because of its unusual appearance.

Its ice cover is filled with amazing bubbles, people come to see it from many parts of the world. Especially such an unusual picture attracts amateur photographers. Although the lake is not natural, its waters are so blue that they can be compared to a reservoir of mountainous origin.

At the last stage of the construction of the Bighorn Dam, the local authorities announced a competition for the best name of the lake. As a result, the reservoir was named after Silas Abraham, who lived in the middle of the Saskatchewan Valley in the 19th century.

There are several businesses and even a helicopter landing site in the surrounding area. Most of the local land is not used, various scientific works are carried out on it.

Abraham Lake is especially popular in winter, when it is covered with a crust of ice. In this state, it is really attractive, because a lot of pretty patterns and bubbles appear on its surface. The main reason for the lake's acquisition of this type is methane, which rises from the bottom of the lake to the frozen crust. These gas bubbles freeze at different depths, which has a charming appearance.

Wonderful methane bubbles are quite common in such lakes. They can be observed in permafrost reservoirs, but they usually hide under the snow cover, which is why they do not attract unnecessary attention.

There are various cracks and frozen ridges of water on the surface of Abraham Lake.

Many tourists and photographers come to see the extraordinarily beautiful surface of the reservoir. But people's memories of such a walk are not very warm, because usually the local temperature is about -30 ° C and below, and in addition to this, cold winds simply burn in the Saskatchewan Valley. It is quite difficult to move on the icy surface, as it is very slippery and covered with irregularities. But the ice of the lake is very transparent, through its entire thickness, which can vary from 5 to 25 cm, the bottom is very clearly visible.

To facilitate such an unusual and risky trip, it is better to use the services provided by local tour desks.

There are several species of fish in Abraham Lake, including perch, salmon, trout, and char. Fishing is possible here, but the uneven coastline does not contribute to this. For fishing, you need to purchase a special permit in the province of Alberta.

In this area, you can also see athletes who are engaged in kite snowboarding.
