Suzhou Gardens: Reading Views Through Windows and Rocks
In a classical Suzhou garden, walls, openings, water and rocks compose changing views. Try seeing a sequence of small pictures instead of searching for one main panorama.

Pause at an opening
Notice what a moon gate or lattice window frames: a branch, roof or water. Move a few steps and compare. Architecture guides your gaze.

Give water and rocks time
Study reflections and ornamental rock silhouettes. You need not know every symbol to notice form, empty space and light. Do not climb rocks or touch historic details.
Choose one garden
Suzhou’s classical gardens are separate sites, not one park with one entrance. Pick a specific garden and check its tickets and rules. One attentive visit beats several hurried ones.
