Miraflores: How a Ship Passes Through the Panama Canal
At Miraflores, watch the water as closely as the ship. Locks allow vessels to move between canal sections at different levels. From the viewing area, follow the sequence rather than waiting only for a photograph.

What to watch
Notice the gates closing, the water level changing and the vessel moving on. A crane does not lift the ship: it keeps floating as the surrounding water rises or falls. The original Miraflores chambers are different from the canal’s expanded locks.

Plan the timing
Check current transits and visitor-centre hours before leaving. Admission does not guarantee a ship at the platform at your chosen moment. Allow spare time and confirm which exhibitions or programmes your ticket includes.
Bring the right things
Binoculars help reveal details from permitted areas. Carry water, sun protection and a camera strap. Understanding one full lock cycle can be more rewarding than taking many pictures.
