Sri Lanka by Train: A Route Through the Tea Hills

Sri Lanka by Train: A Route Through the Tea Hills

The railway through the hill country of Sri Lanka is considered one of the most scenic in Asia. The train moves slowly past tea plantations, forests and cliffs, and the stops along the way deserve attention too.

Kandy

A city by a lake, surrounded by hills. It is considered the cultural center of the island and is home to a well-known Buddhist temple. The journey into the hills often starts here.

Nuwara Eliya

A highland area that is cooler than the coast, with slopes covered in tea plantations. People come here for the views and unhurried walks.

Ella

A small town among the mountains, popular with travelers. Hiking routes start here, and the arched bridge nearby has become one of the country's best-known views.

Travel Tips

  • Popular trains and seats can be taken, so it is better to buy tickets in advance
  • Bring warm clothes: it is noticeably cooler in the hills than below
  • Trains can run late, so do not plan tight connections
  • Be careful near open doors and windows

Important: schedules, ticket-buying rules and carriage classes change. Check current information on the railway's official websites before your trip.

Bottom Line

This route is good for its slowness. Leave a margin of time, look out of the window, and do not try to fit in too many stops.
