The climate varies from subtropical in the north of the country to cool temperate in the south. The southern Alps block the westerly winds and divide New Zealand into 2 parts. Because of this, it often rains in the western part of the country.
New Zealand used to have many glaciers that left behind fords and gorges. The remains of glaciers can be seen in the Te Wahipunamu World Heritage Area, which combines the Fiordland Nature Reserve, Westland, Mount Cook and Mount Aspiring National Parks.
