Peneda Gerez
Peneda Geres is a national nature reserve in Portugal, which is the only park of its kind in the whole country. The park was established in 1971 and covers an area of 720 km2. Peneda-Jeresh crosses two zones, namely the Mediterranean Sea region, as well as the European-Siberian region. For this reason, a peculiar climate prevails here, as well as unique animals and quite rare plants grow in the park. Over a long period of time, neither the lifestyle of the park nor its ecosystem has changed much.
Many tourists come to see the enchanting beauty of the natural park. The landscapes of this area will not leave any traveler indifferent, because they are represented by huge plains, which are replaced by mountain ranges. Rivers flow through the park, waterfalls have also found their place here. Peneda-Jeres Park is inhabited by a large number of different animals, as well as birds.
The border of the Pereda-Geres Park is a semicircle of the mountain range, which includes the summit of Castro Laboreiro on the north side and Mourela on the east. Heavy precipitation is usually observed in the park, which is the reason for the existence of the local deep-flowing rivers. The valleys of the park are filled with lush vegetation, and oaks, bird cherry trees, holly trees, and birches abound here. There are also endemic plants in Peneda-Jeresh, including some species of lilies and ferns. The reserve is home to brown bears, and there are flocks of mountain goats in the mountains of the park. Predatory wolves and eagles have found shelter in the park.
An unusual picture for the protected area is the presence of settlements where old stone houses are located, as well as a medieval fort. A very interesting fact from the life of the local population is that they have two houses, one of which is located high in the mountains, where they spend their time in the summer, and the second is located in the middle of the valley, where they usually winter.
The park houses the Vilarinho das Furnas Museum, which is based on a former village that was affected by flooding due to the construction of a dam here. In addition to its natural riches, the park attracts ancient buildings to its territory, including the castles of Castro Laboreiro and Lindoso. Tour groups usually also visit the flooded village and dam.
Tourism is quite well developed in the Peneda-Jeresh Nature Reserve. There are numerous hiking trails that are designed for both hiking and cycling. Tourists often set up campsites and also stay in special tourist bases. There are highways in the park area, along which there are special signs indicating the direction of the main attractions of the area, although the distance is not indicated, which is not very convenient when traveling.
A map of the park with interesting places can be purchased at the local information center. A trip to Peneda Jeres Park is sure to bring you pleasure, because it really has something to please its visitors.
