Olympia
Olympia is one of the most beautiful places in Greece. Back in 776 BC, the Olympic Games began to take place here. After visiting modern Olympia, you can fully immerse yourself in ancient Greece, see Roman ruins with preserved mosaic elements and many other historical attractions.
Sofia workshop is very popular in Olympia. Despite the fact that the walls are only partially preserved, it was here that one of the great sculptors, who lived during the Golden Age, created a giant statue designed to be placed in the temple of Zeus, which is considered one of the seven wonders of the world. Gold and ivory were used in the manufacture of the statue, so it is a very precious work of art that every tourist should take a look at.
The huge size of the Leonidion in Olympia is admirable. It is believed that it was built for distinguished guests who were invited to the Olympic Games. On the other side of the street from him is the Booleutherion, where only the founders and judges gathered.
Special attention should be paid to the small circular Filion building, which was built by Philip II of Macedon. The temple of Hera, built in 600 BC, is the best preserved in Olympia. Despite the fact that not all the walls of the building have been preserved, here you can see images of the goddess presented in the form of cave paintings.
The Nympheon was built in 106. It was once surrounded by colonnades and statues. The building consists of a semicircular fountain surrounded by several pools. And a little further from it there are ruins and treasuries built to store offerings brought to the gods.
Olympia is famous for its archaeological museum, located opposite the sanctuary, inside which you can see many wonderful statues of the Gods of ancient Rome. But there are other interesting places in Olympia, for example, the Museum of the History of the Olympic Games and the Museum of historical excavations.
Every tourist who visits Olympia will remember walking through its streets for a long time. When you walk along them, for a moment you feel as if you have moved through time, you see the real Olympic Games or you personally compete for the right to be the winner. Walking along the paved stone road, for a moment it may seem that these screams and joyful shouts are somewhere very close, because they are like the breath of Olympia.
