Statue of Christ the Redeemer
In the beautiful city of Rio de Janeiro, which belongs to Brazil, there is a huge statue of Christ the Redeemer. This unusual figure with outstretched arms stands above the city, as if trying to embrace it and protect it from all adversity. The height of the statue reaches 38 meters, which includes an eight-meter pedestal; the figure weighs approximately 1,145 tons, and the span of its arms is 28 meters.
In 1921, the history of this huge monument began. In honor of the centennial of Brazil's independence, the mayor of Rio de Janeiro, which was the capital of the country at that time, announced a competition for the best symbol of the nation. The original idea of the figure, in the form of a huge Christ with his arms outstretched in different directions, was proposed by the artist Carlos Osvaldo. The proposal was designed by local engineer Heitor da Silva Costa. In order for the statue to look the way we see it today, a fundraiser was organized, which was attended by the archbishop himself. As a result, 2.2 million flights were collected for the construction of the statue of Christ the Redeemer.
It took nine years to build the statue of Christ the Redeemer, in addition to money. Construction began in 1922, and it was completed in 1931. The material of the figure is reinforced concrete, as well as soapstone. The technologies of those times in Brazil made it impossible to translate the drawing of the statue into reality, so the finished figure was brought from France, and here it was only mounted and mounted on a stone pedestal.
The statue of Christ the Redeemer was inaugurated in 1931. Since this year and until today, it has always been crowded here, crowds of tourists rush to see the tallest figure, which is known all over the world. After climbing 220 steps that lead to the pedestal of the statue, travelers can enjoy panoramic views of the picturesque places of the city, which include the charming beaches of Ipanema and Copacabana, the popular Maracana stadium, as well as an irresistible bay, which is bordered by a mountain named Sugar Loaf.
A small train approaches the very top, which runs on the railway, which is the first in Brazil.
