Favelas Rio de Janeiro
Favela — is the common name for slums in Brazil that arose in major cities here at the end of the 19th century as a result of the decision of the authorities to demolish dwellings belonging to the poor. Then the once empty territories of the hills and outskirts of the cities gradually began to turn into quarters, where there is still no water, heating and legal electricity supply.
History of the emergence of favelas in Rio
Among the unique mountain landscape of Rio de Janeiro, its fashionable areas and snow-white beaches are non-casist cardboard houses left without Brazil's own housing. Here they began to appear from the middle of the 20th century, while a large number of people from all over the country rushed here in search of work. But there was not enough money to eat or purchase normal housing, so it was built from improvised materials, usually next to rich neighborhoods. Currently, the population of the favelas is one fourth of the total number of the city.
Brazilian ghetto
Since these areas are not controlled by the state, banditry flourishes in them, which means theft, robbery, drug addiction and the trade turnover of cheap weapons used both for attack and for self-defense. People live in conditions of unsanitary conditions and unemployment, intertwining only casual earnings or precarious work, while not receiving education, medical assistance, or other qualified services specific to a normal lifestyle. A taxi and any public transport do not go here, you will not meet ordinary Rio residents either. This extreme situation attracts some tourists, because the tour to these places is very similar to the survival quest.
But it is worth noting that there are still more peaceful, hardworking people than bandits. The latter, by the way, in addition to their main activities, are engaged in the construction of libraries and sports grounds, help the poor and organize festive events.
Rosigna and Santa Maria
The largest favela of Rio, as well as the whole country as a whole, is Rosinya, where about 200,000 inhabitants live. Here, 2-3 storey brick houses predominate, often even with the Internet and satellite TV. There is a large central street, to which many very narrow streets adjoin. The air is filled with aromas of Brazilian cuisine and at the same time with the smog of sewer drains — is a common occurrence for all such areas.
Santa Maria, by contrast, is the smallest slum in Rio, but very colorful because of brightly painted houses. He is famous for the fact that in 1996 a video was shot with the participation of Michael Jackson, in honor of which a golden statue of a great singer was established.
