History of creation
The Seattle Museum of Art has a backstory that begins with the unification of the Seattle Society of Fine Arts, organized in 1905, and the Washington Art Association, established a year later. The organizations announced a merger and continued their work under the name of the Society of Fine Arts.
In 1931, the facility was renamed the Seattle Art Institute. Two years later, the museum opened in the Volunteer Park. They spent $250,000 on its construction, and the city allocated a plot of land for the project and acquired ownership of the building. The Seattle Museum of Art worked here until 1991, and then moved to the city center. The building was designed by Robert Venturi, one of the founders of postmodernism, and the Museum of Asian Art, which still operates here, occupied the premises in the Volunteer Park.
