The Ernest Hemingway House Museum in Chicago is the former residence of the writer, author of "The Old Man and the Sea", "For whom the Bell Tolls", "Islands in the Ocean" and other works. This is one of the first electrified homes in Oak Park. The interiors with Victorian decor have been restored here, children's diaries and personal belongings of the Nobel Prize winner in Literature can be seen.
History of creation
This is the house where the world famous writer was born. The building was built in the Queen Anne style in 1890 by his mother's parents, Ernest and Carolyn Halls. The writer, who was named after his grandfather, spent the first 6 years of his life here. He was born into a wealthy family.
Hemingway's biographers write that his fate was influenced by the environment in which he grew up. Grace's mother taught classes in the living room of the house, and Clarence's father kept stuffed animals, mostly artiodactyls, on the top floor. They went fishing and hunting together, and his father taught his son how to survive in the wild and make stuffed animals.
In 1992, the Ernest Hemingway Foundation bought the house and carried out all the necessary work to restore it. It was possible to restore the original condition, recreated from photographs. On Christmas, Thanksgiving, national holidays, the entrance is closed to guests. On other days, children under 10 years old are free of charge, special fares apply for groups, which can be found out when buying tickets.
