Volzhskaya embankment
Volzhskaya Embankment is located between two central streets of the city - Mira Boulevard and Lenin Avenue. Locals call the embankment a real decoration of the city of Yaroslavl. There is a park on Strelka at the beginning of the lower tier of the embankment, and it is often crowded here.
History of creation
It dates back to the 16th century, when the Yaroslavl Kremlin was built on the current Mira Avenue. In the 17th century, merchants' and artisans' markets began to appear on the banks of the Volga River, which later became known as merchant marinas. In the 18th century, houses and churches gradually began to appear on the modern marina, which began to be called the Volga Embankment. It should be noted that the Volga embankment was not resistant to the rapid flow of the Volga, so in the middle of the 18th century, fortification work began. Church officials started stoning one of the banks, but it wasn't enough.
At the beginning of the 19th century, the city authorities took measures to protect the Volga embankment - it was moved to a sufficient distance from the shore, providing reliable protection from the current. A landmark for this place is the visit of Emperor Alexander the Great, who, after seeing the neglected state of the Volga coast, gave instructions on the reconstruction of the embankment and the purification of the banks of the Volga. Large-scale construction work began, during which several thousand workers and 1,000 vessels were involved, which transported cubic meters of land, with the help of which the coast was leveled and strengthened. The Volga embankment was decorated with cast-iron fences, hundreds of trees were planted and the famous gazebo was built, which is a favorite place for photographing the Volga. In the middle of the 20th century, finishing works were completed - the territory was paved and granite tiles were laid out, and many trees were planted.
Features of the embankment
Many historical buildings have been built along the perimeter of the Volga Embankment. The most important monument is the Volga Tower, which was previously one of the three parts of Zemlyanoe Posad. Yaroslavl Kremlin. For lovers of history and culture, there is also a museum of the Metropolitan Chambers, where you can get to know ancient Russian culture and art better.
