Ajanta

History of the Ajanta Caves

Ajanta is one of India's most remarkable Buddhist art complexes, located in Maharashtra. Around 30 caves were carved into a rocky horseshoe-shaped gorge above the Waghora River. For centuries, they served as monasteries, sanctuaries and places for meditation.

The caves were created in two main phases. The earliest date to approximately the 2nd-1st centuries BCE. Work resumed in the 5th-6th centuries CE under the Vakataka dynasty, when many caves received elaborate decorations and murals.

Architecture and purpose

The caves are broadly divided into chaityas, or prayer halls containing stupas, and viharas, or monasteries with central halls and small cells for monks. Their pillars, ceilings, entrances and shrines display intricate carvings and decorative details.

Murals and Buddhist stories

Ajanta is renowned for wall paintings depicting the Buddha, bodhisattvas, courtly gatherings, musicians, animals and everyday life in ancient India. Many paintings illustrate Jataka stories about the Buddha's previous lives. One of the best-known images is the Bodhisattva Padmapani in Cave 1.

Notable caves

Cave 1 is famous for its murals, while Cave 2 has richly decorated ceilings. Caves 9 and 10 are early prayer halls. Cave 17 contains numerous narrative paintings, Cave 19 has a striking sculpted facade, and Cave 26 features a large reclining Buddha associated with his final nirvana.

UNESCO and cultural importance

Ajanta was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1983. The complex documents the development of Buddhist art and cultural connections between India and other parts of Asia. After a long period of obscurity, the caves came to wider attention again in 1819.

How to get there and when to visit

The caves are about 100 kilometres from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, formerly known as Aurangabad. Visitors can travel by car, taxi, bus or organised tour. October to March is often considered a comfortable period to visit. Allow several hours to explore and protect the murals by avoiding contact and following restrictions on flash photography.
