History of the city

According to official data, the monastery was founded about 2,000 years ago. But the results of archaeological excavations prove that there was a Celtic settlement here as early as the fourth millennium BC. Already in the fourth century AD, a large Christian community appeared in the city. The Christian tombs of Pecha from that period are on the UNESCO Heritage List.

It is believed that the name of the city came from the Great Moravian expression - five (churches). After the fall of the Roman Empire, the city and the surrounding territories changed hands. Barbarians, Huns, Avars, and Slavs ruled here at various times. In the 9th century, the territories were ceded to the Holy Roman Empire.

In the first half of the 16th century, difficult times came for Pec, the city was constantly attacked by the Ottomans. In 1543, Turkish rule was established here for almost 150 years, the local population was oppressed in every possible way, and the development of Christian culture came to a standstill. Pec was liberated in 1686, and the exposition of the Historical Museum of Pec tells about what happened in the city after this event.

History of the building

The Historical Museum of Pec has been located in the building of a former tannery since 1984. The plant was built back in the XVIII century, and combined many functions. The workers worked in the tanneries, and there were apartments where they lived. There were also centralized catering and entertainment facilities. They say there was even a dance hall in the building of the Historical Museum of Pec.

The exposition

Now the factory is no longer in operation, the second floor is given over to exhibitions and installations. The exhibits placed here will help the visitor to literally trace the history of the city, the way of life of its inhabitants from the moment of the overthrow of Turkish rule to 1948. It will take at least one and a half to two hours to see the collection of the Historical Museum of Pec.
