Short description
Gerald the Devil's Castle was built around 1200-1210. It is known that it is the first stone structure in the city. The limestone from which the building was built was brought here from another city, the city of Dornik. A few words should be said about the name of the castle, it owes it to its founder, Knight Gerald, whom everyone called the Devil. The knight received this nickname due to the fact that he was merciless on the battlefield and left no chance for anyone in a duel, and he also knew no mercy on the way to achieve his goals. Since the construction of Gerald the Devil's Castle, it has undergone significant changes - many parts of the building have been rebuilt, and a couple of towers have been added to it and the interior of the castle has been completely renovated, which has added more rooms inside.
Features of Gerald the Devil's Castle
It is located on the riverbank, surrounded by other historical buildings of the city, the castle style is made in "Gothic". This decision was due to the fact that the governor of the castle really liked castles located on German lands and he wanted to have the same castle in his Homeland. At the moment, the building is a real attraction not only of this city, but also of the whole of Belgium. Gerald the Devil's Castle often hosts various exhibitions of local artists, and every day you can meet crowds of tourists who want to see how the Belgian rulers lived in the Middle Ages.
If we talk about the significance of this place, it is difficult not to see it.
