Crescent Lake
Yueyaquan Lake is located near the Chinese town of Dunhuang in the center of the Gobi Desert. This unique masterpiece, created by nature, has the shape of a crescent moon. In translation, this is exactly the meaning it has – "new moon". There is no vegetation around it, only endless sand is present everywhere. The sand dunes located in the circumference protect the lake from the effects of sandstorms. In the middle of the desert, the lake is considered a real paradise.
The lake has long been called the "well in the sands." It was believed that the water had healing properties. Later, this place was set up as a resort. The water in Yueyaquan is very clean and transparent, which gives great value to the lake. Despite the weather conditions, the water in this reservoir is always cool. The entire oasis is surrounded by the Mingshashan Mountains.
The wonderful lake gradually disappears, falling under the rays of the constantly scorching sun, as a result of which the water evaporates. The locals also plunder the water, using it for their own needs. Today, the lake area has been reduced to 5.5 thousand square kilometers, and the deepest place is 1.3 m. It gradually decreases in size, as if sinking to the very bottom.
The local authorities planned to artificially replenish the water in Yueyaquan, but there is not enough funding to implement the plans. Donations are collected here, which go towards the maintenance of the oasis. We have regulated the water consumption standards for the local population, which are prohibited to exceed. It is not allowed to drill additional wells. It remains to be hoped that the lake will not dry up, and will delight with its beauty for many years.
There are a couple dozen trees growing near the shores of Lake Yueyaquan, and they feel comfortable here due to their proximity to the water. Buildings were also built in the architectural style typical of China. The monastery of Confucian monks stands tall, which organically fits into the landscape of the surrounding area. This place is considered a religious shrine of Buddhism. The Empress's palace, the Dragon's palace, and the medicine cave were also built here. There is a special energy in this place.
Yueyaquan Lake is a pearl of the desert and is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
This water attraction is in demand among exotic lovers, ordinary tourists and pilgrims from all over the world. You can get here from the city by camel caravan, exploring the beauty of the surrounding area along the way, or by off-road vehicles. It is forbidden to enter the territory of the oasis on your own transport.
