Generalife in Granada: listening to the water in the gardens

In the Generalife gardens, water does more than just decorate the yard. Canals, pools and green areas help to show how architecture and garden landscape were combined in the summer residence of the rulers of Granada.

Residence near the Alhambra

Generalife is located east of the Alhambra. Its gardens and buildings are associated with the residence of the emirs of the 13th–14th centuries; today they are included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site along with the Alhambra and the Albaycín.

Water and perspective

As you walk, notice how long lines of canals lead the eye across the yard, while trees and walls create shade and separate one space from another. Historical irrigation systems were an important part of this landscape.

How to visit the garden

Check the type of ticket and entry time: the procedure for visiting different parts of the complex may differ. Comfortable shoes are useful on paths and stairs. Do not enter closed areas and do not touch plants or historic furnishings.
