Borobudur: exploring the levels of an ancient temple in Java
Borobudur in Central Java is convenient to view gradually: massive stone tiers are visible below, round platforms and openwork stupas appear above. The monument combines architecture, sculpture and Buddhist symbolism in one large space.

Shape of the temple
The Buddhist monument was built in the 8th–9th centuries. Its base is formed by square terraces, three round platforms are located above, and the composition is completed by a large stupa. On the round levels there are openwork stupas with Buddha statues inside.

Stories in stone
The walls and balustrades are decorated with reliefs. Instead of trying to look at everything at once, you can select several scenes and carefully examine the figures, objects and sequence of images. A museum resource or a licensed local guide will be helpful for context.
How to prepare for your visit
Access to individual levels and visiting procedures may change, so please check the current conditions in advance. Respect the rules of the site and other visitors, do not touch the reliefs and do not climb on the stupas. Water and sun protection are useful for walking around the area.
