Paro Dzong: Fortress, Monastery and Administrative Centre

Paro Dzong: Fortress, Monastery and Administrative Centre

Rinpung Dzong in Paro combines monastic life with district administration. Those functions reveal more than a handsome fortress facade above a valley.

Read the exterior

Notice massive pale walls and upper timber details. Ask your guide how religious and administrative spaces are organised. Courtyards and passages gain meaning beyond photographs.

Check access

Working offices and sacred rooms have restrictions. Confirm permitted areas, guiding and entry conditions. An open door does not grant entry or photography. Cover shoulders and knees and follow staff instructions.

Separate nearby sites

Ta Dzong, home to the National Museum, is a separate building above Rinpung Dzong. Check both independently and allow transfer time rather than treating them as one attraction.
