Son Doong
Son Doong – is the largest and most picturesque cave in the world located in the park area in Vietnam. The length of the cave is more than 7 km, the height is within 150 meters, the width – 90 meters. This natural attraction is so large that it contains a river and some part of the jungle. Translated from Vietnamese, the name of the cave means « Cave of the mountain river ».
Until 1991, the Schondong Cave was hidden in the thickets of the jungle until it was discovered by local residents. But the natural factors protecting the cave - the powerful wind breathing along with the noise of the mountain river, created a frightening effect with terrifying sound accompaniment, and no one dared to go inside. It lasted until 2009. The pioneers who explored the Schondong cave were British scientists led by Howard Limbirth. Using laser range gauges, measurements were made of the territory. It was found that the cave was formed about 2.5 million years ago due to the erosion of limestone with river water. A great condition for the resulting caves was the presence of rocks and a abundant amount of water. There are 2 entrances in the caves. But to the end, the entire underground system remains unexplored.
This unique creation of nature creates a maze, which consists of more than 150 underground corridors that form separate caves. During the rainy season, they, filled with water, become impregnable for visits.
Thanks to the flowing river, a unique ornament formed on the walls, for many years the waves were sculptors, creating the unsurpassed beauty of the karst rocks. The underground landscape almost completely converges with the earth.
Through temperature fluctuations, fogs and clouds form in the cave. Sunlight penetrates from mountain cracks. Giant stalagmites against the background of sunlight are similar to cacti. In the middle of the cave live not only representatives of the flora, but also the fauna – these are birds, snakes, monkeys.
Today, this natural creation is open to tourists. However, getting to the Schondong Cave is pretty hard – you need to make your way through the jungle thickets for a day and a half, and then go down the rope from the cliff. Such a journey is beyond the power of adventure lovers. Having overcome all the difficulties of the path, the masterpiece of nature opens in the eye of incredible beauty, leaving for a long time in memory the beautiful memories of what he saw.
