Gran Canaria is one of the most frequently visited islands of the entire archipelago among the Atlantic Ocean, near the coast of Africa. At least three million travelers visit the island every year. This island has the appearance of a circle that is about 50 km in diameter.
The island is inhabited by more than 800 thousand people, which is slightly less than half of all the inhabitants of the Canary Islands. The island is named after the first settlers, who were powerful natives. All of them were very tall and especially developed physique. It is « gran », if translated from Spanish, means « big ». Thanks to the boosting of the economy and the increase in the population in the archipelago, a particular pace of development has gained such an industry as tourism. In 1957, one of the first flights on board with foreign tourists landed here.
The vacationers here celebrate the island’s special calm. This area is rich in natural attractions, but – cannot boast of museums and architectural monuments. Travelers especially love the south side of Gran Canaria, which stands out for tourist areas. Precipitation here is quite rare, and the entire territory of Gran Canaria ridge is divided into two climatic zones, among which the warm south side and the cooler northern one.
The fauna of Gran Canaria is quite diverse, and there are no insects or snakes dangerous for human life. In transparent sea waters, at least 550 species of fish are found, as well as mammals and reptiles. The amazingly beautiful view is the south of Gran Canaria, where the edge of the Sahara is simply located on the ocean. Nowadays, this territory is assigned to the national park and represents the Maspalomas dunes, as well as a lake with salt water and a territory with palm grove. Only hiking and camel riding are allowed here. Quite often, among the total huge number of tourists, hiking in volcanic formations is in demand. Among such places is the peak of Bandama, from the observation deck of which the unrivaled view of the amazing beauty of the island's mountain landscapes, as well as the entire capital, opens. The highest point of the whole island is Pico de las Nievas, which is also known as « Snow Peak ». Its height reaches the level of 1949 m.
Tourists should also visit the vast Aqualand Maspalomas water park, a wonderful attraction park called Holiday World, as well as the unforgettable most fashionable disco.
