Southern cultures
Southern Cultures is an amazing park in Sochi, built back in 1910 under the guidance of the talented horticulturist Arnold Regel.
In 1910, General Daniil Vasilyevich Drachevsky wanted to establish a large park on his estate, on an area of 11 hectares. To do this, he invited Regel, a specialist in landscape gardening, who divided the entire park with many paths. Along the paths, he received many large flowerbeds of plants and trees, formed into groups: coniferous flowerbeds (cedar, pine, fir, cryptomeria, cypress), deciduous flowerbeds (rhododendron, laurel, magnolia, sycamore), flowerbeds with bamboo, palm trees, etc. Single trees and shrubs were planted in the meadows. Several alleys have been planted in the park, based on Himalayan cedar, tulip tree and fir. Artificial ponds, in which you can see black and white swans, successfully fit into all this beauty. One of the ponds is located in the eastern part of the park, and the second is located on the right side of the main alley. The second pond was built by widening the streambed and surrounding lawns with plant patterns.
In 1920, the park was transferred to the Accidental state farm, and 9 years later it acquired its current name - Southern Cultures. In Soviet times, a new round of development of the park began. In 1936-1939, Professor Artsybashev brought a lot of exotic plants, including Japanese cherries and maples, camellias, hybrid rhododendrons. In the 1950s, a eucalyptus alley was planted.
With the collapse of the Soviet Union, the park was also forgotten, and hurricanes in the late 1980s contributed. Due to the proximity of groundwater, many exotic plants have died or slowed down their growth. It was only in 2008 that they noticed the park and began its reconstruction, which was planned for a year and a half. During the reconstruction, paths and clearings in the park were cleared of fallen, diseased trees and debris, benches were installed, over 200 trees and more than 500 rose bushes were planted. But, nevertheless, the work done did not help the park, then it was decided to transfer it to the Sochi National Park, which carried out a global reconstruction. Nowadays, the park has come to life anew and can delight visitors with its beauty again.
