Mikhailovsky Theater

The Mikhailovsky Theater is an opera and ballet theater in St. Petersburg, it is proudly called one of the most important musical theaters in Russia. The institution was opened in 1833 by decree of Emperor Nicholas I. The complex of buildings is located in a historic building on the Arts Square, and not only residents of the Russian Federation, but also tourists from different countries come here.

A brief history

The opening of the Mikhailovsky Theatre was a landmark event. In society, he was called the rise of Russian architecture and theatrical art to a new level that deserves special attention. In particular, thanks to the work of the Mikhailovsky Theater, Russia has become more often associated with art. Architect Alexander Bryullov supervised the direct construction and development of the Mikhailovsky project. After the 1917 revolution, actors of foreign bourgeois origin were politely asked to leave the Mikhailovsky Theater and the borders of the renovated Russia, where a proletarian worker and peasant was now in charge of everything, including theatrical art. Interestingly, Mikhailovsky did not have his own troupe until 1918.

Features of the Mikhailovsky Theater

In order to erase the mention of the tsarist autocracy from memory, in 1920, all theaters bearing the title "imperial" were ordered by the decision of the new government to be called "academic". The Mikhailovsky Theater is officially called the St. Petersburg State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater named after M. P. Mussorgsky. Since December 2020, Alexander Solovyov has become the chief conductor of the theater, and since 2022 he has been the musical director and chief conductor.
