Villa d’Este

The history of the villa d’Este dates back to the spring of 1550, when the ruler, Cardinal Ferrara Ippolita II d’Este, was appointed to the small town. Arriving in Tivoli, the cardinal immediately wanted to ennoble his residence with a wonderful flowering garden.

Villa d’Este was designed following the example of Adrian’s villa, the ruins of which was carefully studied by the architect of the ruler. Various valuable statues were found in the study of the Adrian villa, became an integral decor of the gardens and the residence of d’Este. That is how this beautiful palace turned into a garden museum step by step. For 22 years there was continuous work around the government residence. Not only magnificent gardens were broken here, but fountains were equipped.

Villa d’Este

For four centuries, the beautiful garden in Tivoli was among the best of its kind attractions. It is unfortunate that before our time little has been saved from him.

The guests of the garden are greatly interested in the local fountains, which in the 15th century was considered an unrealistic achievement of hydraulics. The most complex fountain hydraulic system contained the Organ Fountain, the Dragon, and the Boiling Ladder, which got its name due to turbulent, non-stop water flows, which flowed from more than forty water cannons.

The Road of a hundred fountains is very chic and beautiful. The grottoes of Venus and Diana were located nearby, there was also the fountain of Romett, which symbolized the seven hills of great Rome.

Quite often, guests of the villa d’Este were famous talented people who dedicated their magnificent works to the area. Wonderful gardens and fountains have repeatedly become the object of inspiration of artists. For example, she is captured in the paintings of Fragonar and his friend Hubert Robert.

The magnificent nature of the garden is completely in harmony with the continuous buzzing of fountain water. The villa is open every day except Monday from 8.30 to sunset. Only two fountains from the entire water complex, works on a schedule.
