National Garden in Athens
In the very center of the Greek city of Athens there is a wonderful garden, which is known as the National Garden. It covers an area of 15.5 hectares. The building of the Parliament of the country is located very close to the garden, and on the other hand, it is framed by the Olympic Stadium, which was erected back in 1896.
The oldest ruins are located in the National Garden of Athens, as well as a monument to the very first ruler of the country ( Ioannis Kapodistrius ), a bust of the famous financier ( John Einard ). Monuments to famous Greek poets are also present here, among which is the author of the national anthem of Greece.
The organization of the garden began to be engaged in 1838 by order of Queen Amalia. Work on the ennoblement of garden territory was completed by 1840. The very design of the garden was provided by a gardener from Germany, Frederick Schmidt. It was he who brought into this territory more than 500 plants of various designs, as well as a large number of interesting animals. This climate did not suit everyone, but animals, among which chic peacocks, various types of ducks and funny turtles, feel very good and are supposed to multiply.
Back in 1878, Zappeyon was designed by an architect from Denmark, which was named after the Greek philanthropist, who offered his help in conducting and preparing the very first Olympic, who gave impetus to the current Olympic Games. Since 1920, the entire area in front of Zappeion has served as the most important transport interchange for urban transport. Today, various exhibitions can be observed on the territory of this square.
The National Garden has a well-known case when in 1920 a monkey was bitten by King Alexander, from which he died three weeks later.
The main entrance to the garden is on Leoforos Amalias Street, which is named after Queen Amalia.
On the territory of the garden there is a beautiful pond where ducks feel wonderful. There is also a small zoo that attracts attention of both adults and children. Children can also have fun on equipped playgrounds or visit the library. The park has cozy cafes and a museum of amazing rare plants.
