The house of childhood, youth and first creative torments

It is noteworthy that the placement of the rooms and the interior in them were recreated according to archival written sources and drawings, and all the exhibits are genuine, fortunately preserved after the bombings in World War II.

The first floor includes an entrance hall, two living rooms and a kitchen with a wood-burning stove, a table and various utensils. The second one consists of two offices, a fireplace room, another living room, made in the best Chinese traditions of the 18th century. There was also a separate room where the entire Goethe family played music with pleasure, arranging small family concerts. The floors are connected by a luxurious and unique staircase.

The third floor introduces visitors to literary and artistic art. Here they can see a huge library. About 2,000 books by various authors are stored on the shelves of tall cabinets. In addition, many paintings by German artists are displayed on the silk-covered walls.

One of the rooms on the fourth floor was a playroom, where little Johann played with his favorite toys, among which the puppet theater, given to him by his grandmother for his four years, and now shown to all guests of the house, stands out. The so-called writer's workshop, that is, the birth room of his first works, was also modeled by restorers.

Of the personal belongings of the playwright, it is worth noting the astronomical clock of the mid-18th century with indicators of today's date, the phase of the moon and the height of the sun above the horizon. The house also contains graphics and sculptures, manuscripts autographed by the famous German writer.

Museum-Gallery of German Art

Not far from Goethe's house is the museum of the same name with an extensive art gallery located in 14 rooms. It shows not only the author's works, most of which are portraits, but also covers the work of contemporary artists of the thinker, such as I.G. Fussli, K.D. Friedrich, F.O. Runge and others. Separately, we can highlight the image of Charlotte Buff - the prototype of the heroine Lotta from "The Suffering of Young Werther".
