Goethe House Museum

Among the many attractions of German Frankfurt, a house with four floors and architecture in the Baroque style of the XVIII century deserves special attention. It is here that the expositions dedicated to the great poet, writer, playwright, and philosopher J. V. Goethe are located.

Goethe House Museum

The home of childhood, youth and the first creative torments

It is noteworthy that the placement of the rooms and the interior in them have been recreated from archival written sources and drawings, and all the exhibits are authentic, fortunately preserved after the bombing in World War II.

The ground floor includes an entrance hall, two living rooms and a kitchen with a wood-burning stove, a table and a variety of utensils. The second one consists of two offices, a fireplace room, and another living room made in the best Chinese traditions of the 18th century. There was also a separate room where the whole Goethe family enjoyed playing music, arranging small family concerts. The floors are connected by a luxurious, unique staircase.

The third floor introduces visitors to literary and artistic art. Here they will be able to see a huge library. There are about 2,000 book editions by various authors on the shelves of tall cabinets. In addition, there are many paintings by German artists on the silk-upholstered walls.

One of the rooms on the fourth floor was a playroom, where little Johann played with his favorite toys, among which the puppet theater, given to him by his grandmother for his fourth birthday, stands out, and is now being shown to all the guests of the house. The restorers also modeled the so-called writer's workshop, that is, the birth room of his first works.

Of the playwright's personal belongings, it is worth noting an astronomical clock from the middle of the 18th century with indicators of the current date, the phase of the moon and the height of the sun above the horizon. The house also has objects of graphics and sculptures, autographed manuscripts of the famous German writer.

Museum-Gallery of German Art

Not far from the Goethe house there is a museum of the same name with an extensive art gallery located in 14 halls. It shows not only the author's works, most of which are portraits, but also covers the work of artists who were contemporaries of the thinker, such as I.G. Fussli, K.D. Friedrich, F.O. Runge, and others. Separately, we can highlight the image of Charlotte Buff, the prototype of the heroine Lotte from "The Sufferings of Young Werther."
