Boulogne Forest
The Bois de Boulogne Forest, which in French sounds like Le bois de Boulogne, belongs to Paris and occupies 865 hectares. This gorgeous forest area is located near the suburb of Boulogne-Billancourt and is rightfully considered the source of oxygen for the entire metropolis.
The history of the Bois de Boulogne dates back to the time when the Merovingian dynasty ruled, but then there were thickets of oaks here, which were called Rouvres. The local nobility often chose this forest area for active hunting of wild boars, deer and other wildlife.
The name of the forest came from the church that existed here, which was built back in 1308 by order of Philip IV the Beautiful and named Notre-Dame-de-Boulogne-le-Petit. Over time, the church was destroyed, but its glorious name stuck to this forest.
There were times when bandits roamed the forest, which led to the construction of a huge wall around its perimeter back in 1556.
The Bois de Boulogne began to be improved during the reign of Louis XIV. It was he who ordered the paths to be laid through the forest, and later the area to be opened to the townspeople. Since the 18th century, the forest has become a favorite place for the Parisian nobility to stroll. But Napoleon III did not stop there and wanted to see a park instead of a forest, taking the English landscape garden as an example. In 1852, many trees and flowers were planted on the local territory, as well as waterfalls, artificial ponds and alleys were created. After some time, cozy cafes and restaurants appear in the Bois de Boulogne.
Today, the Bois de Boulogne is an entertainment complex for the whole family. There are a couple of racetracks on its territory, where exciting horse races are regularly held. There is also the Bagatelle Palace, which was built in 1775. There is also an opportunity to enjoy the art of this country on the territory of the park, which is represented in the local museum. The Bois de Boulogne also provides fun for children, as there are various attractions and even a menagerie. Here you can sit in a beautiful gazebo and admire the beauty of exotic plants from the bottom of your heart.
The Bois de Boulogne itself is one of the most visited parks by locals, as well as visitors to the country. Here you can choose the entertainment you like.: like horseback riding or boating on the lake, or just sitting on the green lawn for a pleasant picnic.
But it is worth mentioning that the Bois de Boulogne has long been famous as the "red light district", which the local authorities are actively fighting.
