History of the Con Dao Islands
A group of 16 islands is located in the south of Vietnam and provides tourists and locals with more than 70 square kilometers of land. At the same time, the largest island (Conchon) occupies 51 square kilometers. The archipelago was discovered back in the 13th century, and the first complete description was given by Marco Polo.
The Koh Tao island group began to be actively used only five centuries later, when the East India Company built the first port for its ships here. However, the archipelago was used for peaceful purposes for a very short time, a little later one of the most terrible prisons was erected on the main island. It is estimated that over 20,000 prisoners died there during the existence of the casemate. Today, the former prison has been turned into a museum, which can be visited independently or as part of an excursion.
Description of the Koh Tao Islands
Charming snow-white beaches, elegantly framed by mountains and forests, emerald waters and numerous coral reefs allow you to enjoy your vacation, instantly forgetting about the problems of the "outside" world. The additional charm of the islands is given by the absence of tourists who prefer to visit more famous resorts.
The temperature practically does not change throughout the year: during the day, the air warms up from 26 degrees (December-March) to 32 degrees (May-September). Nighttime temperatures are kept at 25-27 degrees. The best time to visit is from December to April: there is no precipitation at this time, and the temperature stays at a comfortable 27-29 degrees. The rainy season lasts from May to November, but this is not at all a reason to abandon the trip: it rains much less here than on the mainland, and they are very short in time.
What should I do?
It is best to lie on the heated sand and listen to the gentle lapping of the waves. For those who prefer to spend their holidays more actively, the archipelago offers diving and snorkeling, especially since Vietnam is famous for its amazing underwater world. Wildlife lovers will love the National Park, where you can admire exotic animals, as well as get acquainted with giant turtles crawling ashore to lay eggs. However, for this you need to go to Con Dao from February to June.
For history lovers, there are museums of the Lighthouse, the Revolution, and Prisons. It is worth considering that there is no developed tourist infrastructure in the archipelago. On the one hand, it gives you the opportunity to fully immerse yourself in the beach and sea charm, on the other hand, it can be boring in the evenings.
