Trafalgar Square – is a very popular London square located in the middle of Westminster. It is in this place that the main streets of Great Britain originate. Traditionally, various rallies and demonstrations take place here.

Trafalgar Square

The foundation date of the famous square is 1820. This place used to be called Charing Cross. Here was a cross, erected in honor of the wife of Edward I.

When the royal stables were demolished in the territory where Trafalgar Square is now located, one of the local architects proposed to build this attraction. The original name of the square was in the name of William IV, but later, the name was given in honor of a very significant event for the whole country – victory in the Battle of Trafalgar.

Here, on Trafalgar Square, the Nelson monument rises, in honor of the murdered brave Admiral Nelson during the hostilities. This significant Nelson column is the famous symbol of all of London. It has the appearance of a large monument of 44 meters, where the 5-meter sculpture of the hero admiral rises. The base and top of the sculpture consists of bronze. On opposite sides of the famous monument are fountains, as well as wonderful hardened lions.

There are also four pedestals, three of which occupy beautiful monuments to George IV, Charles Napier, Henry Hayvlock. The latter will not find his faithful master in any way, since periodically, here one talented figure replaces the second.

In addition to the fact that this area is the beginning of the most important streets, there is a wonderful traffic junction, and is believed to be always loaded with transport.

The real live decoration of Trafalgar Square was pigeons, of which there were just thousands, but in 2000 they banned the sale of feeding for birds, and later imposed penalties for those who feed pigeons. As a result, hungry birds left the territory.

Trafalgar Square is always very crowded and festive. Various events are often held here. Every year, in the new year, the main Christmas tree of Great Britain lights the lights here.

Guests of London who find themselves on Trafalgar Square have the opportunity to visit the largest London National Gallery in the neighborhood. The largest collection of books in this country is also located here. Famous streets that start with Trafalgar Square lead to very significant sights in the UK.
