Beaumaris Castle
On the island of Anglesey, which belongs to Wales, there is a wonderful old castle with an unusual name - Beaumaris, which means "beautiful swamp". It has a great location, right on the shore of the Menai Strait.
The construction of the castle began as early as 1295, by order of the ruler Edward I. Beaumaris belongs to the final structures in Wales, which were defensive in nature. All the scientists who have studied this architecture are of the opinion that this is a very correct, or rather impeccable, building. The author of the Beaumaris Castle project is James St. George, who attached special importance to the defensive elements. The castle is made in precise symmetry, which ensures its best defense capability. The construction of this fortress lasted for three decades, but remained unfinished. With all this, Beaumaris Castle is considered the most stable and reliable among all such medieval structures. It was simply impossible for the opponents to capture Beaumaris Castle, because to do this they had to overcome a huge moat connected to the sea, steel gates, and a large number of loopholes. All these protective elements, and, of course, the absence of active hostilities on its territory throughout the history of its existence, allowed the castle to reach our time almost unchanged.
The modern Beaumaris Castle is a wonderful tourist attraction, which is visited annually by a considerable number of travelers. Considering that the castle has perfectly preserved all its main buildings, the excursion to the Middle Ages turns out to be quite realistic. Here you can climb up to the loopholes, look at the ancient towers up close, and walk around the ring of walls. From the height of the observation decks, there is an opportunity to see a small town that is particularly interesting to people who are interested in history. This town of the same name is quite lively, despite its size. Here you can walk along the Georgian embankment, go to a medieval shop, and taste the colorful market.
Penmon Monastery, which is located near the castle, is also quite popular among tourists. There are rumors that the monastery has an amazing aura that attracts people, forcing them to come back again and again.
