Cabrillo National Monument is included in the list of protected natural lands in the south of the Point Loma Peninsula, which was allocated for a park dedicated to Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, a navigator who served the Spanish Crown. This is a historic landmark in the United States, attracting the attention of both locals and tourists.
History of creation
The land for the Cabrillo National Monument was allocated in 1926, but construction work was postponed for several years. As a result, in the late 1930s, Portugal presented America with a 4-meter statue weighing about 7 tons of sandstone, this is the work of sculpture by Alvaro de Brie.
In 1949, the Cabrillo National Monument was erected to commemorate an important event in the form of the first landing of a European of Castilian descent in San Diego Bay in 1542. A lighthouse was built on its territory to light the way for ships, and after its closure it was converted into a museum of maritime history. Over time, it turned out that the sandstone from which the Cabrillo National Monument was created turned out to be unsuitable due to climatic conditions, and it was replaced with a limestone replica.
Short description
The park, which is located 16 kilometers from the center of San Diego, offers views of the harbor and the skyline of San Diego, Coronado and the North Island Naval Base. When the weather is clear outside, you can admire the Pacific expanses. Please note that it is often windy in this place, so it is recommended to dress warmly to feel comfortable when visiting the Cabrillo National Monument.
The museum center presents exhibitions telling about how travel took place in the XVI century. You can learn more about Cabrillo's expedition and see how California developed. The movie "In Search of Cabrillo" and other films are being shown in the cinema.
Every year in October, the Cabrillo Festival is held in memory of the great Spanish conquistador and navigator. In addition, the complex hosts celebrations of the Kumeyaai Indians, who are considered the indigenous people of California. Festivals with songs, dances and traditional food are organized. Interactive exhibitions with reconstructions of 16th-century camps and miniature replicas of the discoverers' ships are popular.

Public transport is available: if you take bus No84, you need to get off at the "Cabrillo National Monument", you need to walk 5 minutes from the bus stop to it.
