Sharjah Desert Park shows how beautiful nature is in the United Arab Emirates. It was opened to preserve rare species of animals typical of the region, to provide locals and guests with a recreation area where they can not only have fun, but also broaden their horizons.
History of creation
The Wildlife Park Museum was established in 1995 on the initiative of the UAE Government. A large area was allocated for the implementation of the project: the area of the attraction is 1 square kilometer. It was planned that the new location would allow the preservation of animals listed in the Red Book, and these expectations were justified.
The Sharjah Desert Park was also launched for educational purposes, so that visitors could learn about the life of the desert and see exhibits related to natural processes, including volcanic eruptions. There are none in the country, but the ecosystems of the desert and the sea, including a volcanic eruption, have been recreated in Sharjah. Everything is done realistically, so some visitors return to this place during their next trip.
Short description
The entertainment and educational park stands out against the backdrop of the desert oases, but it is one of the most visited places in Sharjah, the third largest emirate of the UAE. According to statistics, it is visited by about 300,000 people a year. The path from the city center is 28 kilometers, the route to the Sharjah Desert Park passes through dunes with thorny balls of the herbaceous tumbleweed plant.
The Sharjah Desert Park includes a botanical museum, as well as a natural history museum, an Arabian wildlife center, a children's farm, and a cafe. At the entrance, everyone is told that it is forbidden to photograph animals, violators of the ban receive a fine. The park's territory is equipped with air conditioning, so it is comfortable to stay here all year round.
What can I see
- In addition to the ecosystem of the desert and the sea, dinosaur skeletons, prehistoric, historical fossils and other exhibits can be seen in the Museum of Natural History.
- The Botanical Museum has collected plants that have been able to adapt to life in the Arabian Desert. Among them are cacti, agaves, succulents, and there is a section dedicated to plants that are mentioned in the Quran. We are talking about dates, pomegranates, olive trees.
- In the open and closed aviaries of the Arabian Wildlife Center, you can get acquainted with rare representatives of the Arabian fauna, including the Mediterranean gull, the Arabian leopard, the sand cat, camel spiders, the ram and the Arabian oryx. Birds and animals live in close to natural conditions.
- The children's farm in Sharjah Desert Park contains goats, sheep, chickens, guinea pigs, horses, and donkeys. They are also provided with proper care. The animals can be fed, and you can also ride a camel.
How to get
Sharjah Desert Park is located among the sand dunes, about 30 kilometers east of the city. It is not uncommon to meet tourists from Dubai. Public transport does not go here, so you can take a taxi or a rented car along the E88 highway. Families with children often come here, admission is free for up to 12 years old. Students usually study the history, flora and fauna of the UAE with interest.
