Miniatürk

Miniatürk is an open-air miniature park in Istanbul, located on the shore of the Golden Horn in the Sütlüce district. It features scaled-down replicas of famous architectural landmarks from Türkiye and historic territories associated with the Ottoman Empire. Visitors can see celebrated mosques, palaces, bridges, ancient cities, and natural attractions in one place.

The park opened on May 2, 2003. Most models are built at a scale of 1:25, allowing visitors to examine architectural details from a different perspective. The collection presents the heritage of Istanbul, Anatolia, and former Ottoman territories without requiring long journeys between destinations.

History of Miniatürk

The project was developed by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality with the participation of the city's cultural organisation Kültür A.Ş. Construction began in 2001, and the park officially opened in May 2003. Its creators aimed to bring monuments from different historical periods together and illustrate the region's architectural development over thousands of years.

Landmarks were selected according to their historical importance and recognition. Specialists reproduced the proportions, facades, decorative elements, and distinctive features of the original structures. The park's concept presents a small-scale model of a large and culturally diverse country.

Architectural Landmarks of Istanbul

A significant part of the exhibition is dedicated to Istanbul, a city that served as the capital of major empires. The models include famous mosques, palaces, historic buildings, bridges, and other city landmarks. They bring together architectural heritage from the Byzantine and Ottoman periods.

Highlights include models of Hagia Sophia, Topkapı Palace, and the Blue Mosque. Visitors can also explore historic structures associated with trade, urban life, and transportation. The miniature displays make it easier to examine domes, minarets, arcades, and decorative facades.

Landmarks of Anatolia

Another section focuses on Anatolia, a historic region where numerous civilisations developed. It features ancient monuments, fortresses, caravanserais, bridges, religious buildings, and historic settlements.

Notable models include the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus and the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus. These were among the celebrated monuments of the ancient world, although only ruins or archaeological remains survive today. The miniatures help visitors imagine how the original structures may have appeared.

The park also represents Türkiye's natural attractions, including the unusual rock formations of Cappadocia and the white travertine terraces of Pamukkale. These displays highlight the country's natural as well as architectural heritage.

Ottoman Heritage

The collection extends beyond the borders of modern Türkiye and includes landmarks associated with former Ottoman territories. These models illustrate how architectural traditions spread across the empire and interacted with local cultures. Mosques, bridges, fortresses, public complexes, and historic buildings are represented.

Comparing structures from different regions reveals shared architectural features alongside local variations. Miniatürk offers an introduction to the historical connections between places that now belong to different countries.

Park Layout and Model Scale

Miniatürk covers approximately 60,000 square metres, with around 15,000 square metres devoted to miniature models. Most exhibits are built at a scale of 1:25, making it possible to compare buildings and examine their architectural characteristics.

The models are arranged outdoors among paths, greenery, and water features. The layout guides visitors through sections devoted to Istanbul, Anatolia, and former Ottoman territories. Walking between the displays provides an overview of the region's architectural diversity.

Activities and Facilities

Miniatürk is designed for more than architecture and history enthusiasts. The grounds include a children's playground, a miniature sightseeing train, a maze, and other family activities. Food outlets and souvenir shops are also available.

An audio guide and mobile application can provide additional information about the exhibits and their historical backgrounds. The availability of individual attractions and facilities may change, so visitors should check current arrangements before their trip.

Why Visit Miniatürk?

The park is suitable for families, history enthusiasts, architecture lovers, and photographers. Children can explore tiny buildings and bridges, while adults gain an overview of Türkiye's cultural heritage. The exhibition can also help travellers decide which landmarks to visit in person.

One of the park's main advantages is the opportunity to see landmarks located hundreds of kilometres apart in a single place. A walk through Miniatürk becomes a symbolic journey from Istanbul to the ancient cities of Anatolia and historic centres of the former Ottoman Empire.

Location and Visiting Information

Miniatürk is located in Sütlüce, on the European side of Istanbul, along the Golden Horn. Visitors can reach it by public transport or car.

Allow several hours to explore the collection, especially if you plan to study the models in detail or use the audio guide. Check current opening hours, ticket prices, and the availability of additional activities before visiting.
