Citadel Park

After ending the war for the Spanish throne, Philip V in 1714 ordered the construction of a fortress in the center of Barcelona, and its guns to be put in the direction of residential areas. Several residential areas were demolished for the construction of the fortress, and also imposed a special tax, reminding the inhabitants of Catalonia that they lost the war for their sovereignty. In this form, the fortress stood for about 150 years and in the 19th century the fortress became unnecessary. The Spanish authorities gave the green light to the destruction of the fortress, the townspeople enthusiastically destroyed it. At the moment, Arsenal current, which is used as the residence of the Parliament of Catalonia, has remained from the buildings of the fortress. The rest of the fortress became the Citadel Park.

In 1888, the Citadel Park was elected to host the first World Exhibition. To do this, the park was rebuilt and decorated with pavilions. In 1892, a zoo appeared on the territory. The base of the park is 3 alleys and a pond on which you can watch turtles that love to bask on stones, as well as fish. Vegetation together with a cozy atmosphere contributes to peace. In one of the reservoirs there is a statue of Despair, made by a Catalan sculptor and became a symbol of Barcelona. In 1881, the park was opened by the Cascade fountain, which adorns the sculptural ensemble with the quadriga of Aurora. At that time, several sculptors worked on the fountain, among which was little known to anyone Antonio Gaudi, who later became famous throughout the world due to his creations: Guell Park and the Sagrada Familia.

Citadel Park

In the Citadel Park there is a castle of three dragons, from which the history of Catalan modernism began. Nowadays, it houses the restaurant of Lewis Dumenek-i-Muntane, as well as the zoological museum. A significant part of the park is occupied by the Barcelona Zoo, known for its rare animals. In the zoo there is a dolphinarium in which you can find a killer whale, a whale skeleton, as well as a miniature of Montserrat Mountain.
