The history of the Monte Palace

It begins with the arrival on the island of Madeira of the British Consul Murray, who acquired a plot in the south of the island and named it Monte Estate. At the end of the 20th century, rich representatives of the famous families of Madeira settled in this place. In 1900, the estate was acquired by Alfred Rodrigues, where he made significant changes and built his own palace.

The Monte Palace began to serve as a hotel, and many famous personalities stayed here at different times. Before the outbreak of World War II, the property passed to Rodrigues' heirs, who did not want to continue his business. Later, they sold this complex, and it was named the Monte Tropical Garden. Significant changes have taken place here - new plants have appeared, and many parts of the palace have been restored. The park itself is decorated with square stones, figures, and Japanese lanterns that were brought by Portuguese navigators.
