Cave of Swallows
Swallow Cave is an unusual cave among the tropics in central Mexico. It has a very large depth and is the second deepest in the country, and ranks 11th in the world ranking. The cave goes down about 376 meters.
The entrance to the Swallow Cave itself has the appearance of a large hole, which is about 55 meters in diameter. It is not so easy to look at this natural wonder, because there is not a wide footpath leading here, and even more so, which can be driven using a jeep. Environmentalists are carefully working to preserve the local unique ecosystem as much as possible, for which there is a whole list of prohibitions to researchers.
Sotano de las Golondrinas usually appears much smaller than its full size. This cave can tickle the nerves of even the most experienced cavers, as well as well-trained base jumpers, because the base of the cave is 55 meters, presented in the form of a neck, and then expands to about 160 meters at the bottom.
The Swallow Cave got its name for a reason, because whole flocks of swallows fell in love with it. It has long been inhabited by more than one million of these animals. It is allowed to go deep into the cave at certain hours in order not to disturb the local residents, besides it is very dangerous if you encounter a flock of birds in free flight.
Local descents are carried out only in one place, for which there is a dedicated trail with a special platform.
The bottom of the Swallow Cave is densely packed with bird waste, as well as broken pieces of walls. This mixture, mixed with sediments, serves as food for a large number of insects, as well as reptiles. There is a very specific air here, which is filled with an unpleasant odor, which is associated with the constant processes of rotting, as well as the formation of mold and mildew.
The bravest extreme athletes who jump without parachutes gather at the cave of Swallows. Such free falls take no more than 15 seconds of time. It is also possible to make a parachute jump, but without special training, it is better not to take risks, because you need to be able to open it in a very short period of time.
Since 2009, the surrounding settlements have had the opportunity to develop, as they receive income from numerous tourists, because base jumpers and speleologists are very fond of this area.
