Sea Sulawesi
The Sulawesi Sea is named after the island of the same name, where the local population extracts minerals, including iron. Sulawesi is the "island of iron" or "iron island".
General information
Sulawesi is an inter-island sea, part of the waters of the Pacific Ocean, belongs to Indonesia and the Philippines. The sea area is about 500,000 km2, the maximum depth is more than 6 thousand meters. The Sulawesi Sea is an important transportation hub, with two major ports through which local trade is conducted.
Venagon Port
The port of Venagon is located in the city of Manado, on the island of Sulawesi. Manado is the capital of the province of North Sulawesi, the city serves as a center for agriculture and fishing. The population of the city and its surroundings is busy working in the fields, where corn, rice, and various spices are grown. In addition, logging operations are underway here.
Sometime in 1658, Dutch colonists founded a city called Fort Amsterdam, which eventually grew into the city of Manado. Today, various world-class conferences and congresses are held here. In 2005, a conference was held here to discuss the problems of the oceans and their importance in the context of global climate change. And in 2012, the city hosted the international tourism Forum of Southeast Asian countries.
Manado is widely known among locals and not only lovers of the depths of the sea. In 1991, the National Marine Park was founded here. Among the natural attractions here are the active volcano Lokon and the Wildlife Reserve.
Tarakan Port
The port of Tarakan is located on the island of the same name, in the city of the same name. Translated from the language of the Tidung people, the word "Cockroach" means "meeting place". For a long time, the island, in the literal sense,"was a meeting place for travelers from different countries, here they stopped to rest, trade and collect supplies for the further journey. Oil production has been carried out on the island since the end of the 19th century, and residents of the island are still engaged in this work today.
Wildlife of the Sulawesi Sea
The sea is home to a huge number of marine creatures, including whales and dolphins, as well as sea turtles, rays and tuna, and many more tropical fish. The abundance of corals forms one of the largest and most diverse reefs in the world. Divers from all over the world are rushing to admire all these beauties.
