Sparrow Hills

Brief description

The Vorobyovy Gory received its name from the village of Vorobyova, which in turn received its name from the Vorobyovy boyar family. Their residence stood on these mountains at the beginning of the 14th century. For many centuries, the Sparrow Hills were considered a popular place for conquerors, who, standing on the edge of the high banks, looked at the beauty of Rus' and thought about their plans. There are a lot of photographs on the Internet where Vorobyovy Gory was taken as a basis. The view of these mountains is popular among Russian cartoons.

Attractions

Sparrow Hills are famous for the fact that royal families lived at their location, entire residences were built from the most expensive materials, and the rooms were sheathed in red. The church was built in 1453, precisely at the moment when Sofya Vitovtovna bought the village of Vorobyova. The village was also called “Popovsky” because of the priest who permanently lived there. There are documents that in the 16th century there was a St. Andrew’s Monastery at the foot of Sparrow Hill. It was an exclusively male monastery and women were strictly prohibited from entering. The founder of the monastery was considered to be the boyar Fyodor Rtishchev.
In the 17th century, the Cathedral of Christ the Savior was supposed to stand on the mountains, which served as a monument to the Patriotic War, but due to the soil, the mountain began to crumble, and construction was stopped for fear that the Temple might turn into ruins at one time. Towards the end of the 19th century, Vorobyovy Gory became a very popular place for Muscovites to relax, celebrate big holidays, weddings and much more. But because of the name Vorobyovy Gory, the authorities decided to hold the first official Bird Day in the year 25 of the 20th century. Various kinds of houses and bird feeders were hung. Even one of the famous writers, Vladimir Mayakovsky, took part.
