Nuuksio
Nuuksio National Park is located just 30 kilometers from Helsinki and is a favorite vacation spot for citizens who prefer an active lifestyle. Over 170,000 people visit the park annually.
Nuuksio National Park was founded in 1994 on an area of 53 km2. In the park you can see various terrain: dense forests, swamps, mountain slopes, numerous lakes that appeared here during the Ice Age. The local areas unsuitable for agriculture have become a haven for wild animals: bears, lynxes, deer, and berries and mushrooms grow in large quantities in the forests themselves. In the mountains, among the pine forests, rare nightjars and wood larks are hiding, which are currently on the verge of extinction. There are many rare animals in Nuuxio, among them the flying squirrel, which has disappeared in the rest of Europe. She feels comfortable in the park, and she is also a symbol of the national park.
You can rent equipment, eat at a restaurant, buy souvenirs, and get the necessary information about the park, including in Russian, at the Khaltia visitor center near the park. All park routes start from the center: hiking, horseback riding, and skiing. The Gnome trail is one of the shortest, with a length of only 2 km. The trail is circular and makes it easy to move around with a wheelchair. Another route of a similar length is called Zaryanka, during which visitors will enjoy stunning views of the lakes with their peat islands and pine forests. Outdoor enthusiasts should take the Hawk or Haukkalampi-Haltia route. The trails run along steep slopes and are not suitable for every traveler.
If desired, you can go kayaking in Nuuksio National Park or fishing in the lake for fish, of which there are a lot. Fishing is prohibited in running water and streams. There are 22 kilometers of trails for equestrian enthusiasts, and 30 km for cyclists. Well, when it snows, a ski slope is laid along some trails.
The trails are usually equipped with special recreation areas with summer kitchens, a bio toilet and dry firewood. It is forbidden to break trees for firewood, besides, there is always plenty of firewood at the campfires. You can't litter in the park, so all the garbage must be thrown into a special container or burned.
