Sedlec Ossuary
For hundreds of years, there has been a bone storage in Sedlec, the components of which are the remains of 40 thousand people. This building is intended as a kind of reminder that human life is only a moment in the life of the universe. This place is certainly one of the most popular unusual and mystical sights of the Czech Republic.
The cemetery in Sedlec, which is located near the town of Kutna Hora, has gained great popularity all over the world. And this is not for nothing, because the imagination of mankind is simply amazed by these amazing decorations in the form of crosses, pyramids, coats of arms that were built from the bones of our ancestors.
Two chapels that are built on top of each other serve as integral parts of the temple. At the bottom, there are gloomy products that can tickle the nerves, because they were made from human remains.
In 1278, the abbot went to the Holy Land and took with him some land, which he scattered in the monastery cemetery. This is how the area turned into a Holy Field and became interesting as the main burial place. Epidemics and wars have become the main reason for the burial of more than 40 thousand bodies in this area.
The architect of such an unusual building is the talented Jan Blazey Santini Eichel, who gave it a Baroque style. But the master František Rint was most noted here, thanks to whom these unusual decorations of one of the chapels exist. It's amazing, but all the details that decorate the interior here are created from bones and skulls that belonged to people. The bones were previously disinfected and bleached with calcium chloride. They are carefully laid out in the form of various shapes, the similarity of which does not exist in all of Europe.
The cemetery in Sedlec stores amazing things, visiting its walls, be sure that such unusual paintings will remain in your memory for a long time. Here, on display, there is a large chandelier, various cups, as well as a cross made from the same bones. The Turk stands out especially among all the bone expositions, to which the raven mercilessly pecks the eye.
If you want special emotions, then there is an opportunity to visit the ossuary at night. The pictures of human remains wrapped in dark fog will certainly make the adrenaline rush a little.
