Zhangye Danxia

The colorful rocks of Zhangye Danxia are simply amazing mountain ranges that belong to China. These enchanting formations in the middle of Gansu Province are a photographer's dream. The constituent components of the rainbow rocks of Zhangye Danxia are mainly red sandstones dating back to the Cretaceous period.

Thanks to the studies of various researchers, a picture of their occurrence emerges. They claim that about 100 million years ago there was a huge indoor pool at this place, where a large amount of silt was brought in from the circumference with the help of water. At the time of global warming, the area was drained, and the sediment itself was oxidized and turned rusty.

More than 70 million years ago, the Rocks of Zhangye Danxia acquired a red layer, the size of which is 3,700 meters. This layer is located among the so-called chalk bed, as it belongs to this particular period. Since that time, the formation of mountains has not stopped, they have repeatedly changed their landscape, various slopes and crevices have appeared here.

Scientists have repeatedly conducted various examinations here, according to the results of which the Colored Rocks of Zhangye Danxia continue to form at a speed of about 0.87 meters per 10 thousand years. This trend of change has been observed for the last 500 thousand years.

More and more tourists visit these colorful slopes of Zhangye Danxia every year. The town of Zhangye is not rich in attractions at all, it does everything possible to increase the flow of travelers to this area. For the convenience of tourists, many boardwalks were built here, as well as roads were built. Travelers who have chosen this area are full of emotions, because such a natural picture is nowhere else to be found. These huge multicolored rocks are simply amazing. The World Heritage Committee did not ignore them either, which included this natural landmark in the UNESCO list in 2010.
