Preah Vihear

Preah Vihear is an ancient Hindu temple complex in northern Cambodia, in the Dangrek Mountains near the Thai border. Dedicated to Shiva, it stands on a high rocky escarpment overlooking the Cambodian plains. The temple is celebrated for its long ceremonial layout, stone stairways, monumental entrance pavilions and finely carved decoration.

History of the Temple

The sacred site's history reaches back to the 9th century, when a religious hermitage existed here. Successive Khmer rulers expanded and altered the complex over several centuries. The principal structures date largely to the first half of the 11th century, although its architectural development continued across different reigns.

Setting in the Dangrek Mountains

The temple occupies the edge of a high plateau, where the natural cliff provides wide views across the plains. Unlike many Khmer temples built on flat land, Preah Vihear is closely integrated with the mountain terrain. Its approach follows a sequence of levels, paths and stairways that gradually lead visitors toward the sacred centre.

Architecture and Five Gopuras

The complex extends along a roughly 800-metre south-to-north axis. Five monumental entrance pavilions, known as gopuras, stand at different levels and are connected by stone walkways and stairs. Sandstone, local rock, columns, doorways and carved ornament combine to create a distinctive example of Khmer architecture adapted to its setting.

Religious Significance

Preah Vihear was dedicated to Shiva. In Hindu cosmology, mountains can evoke Mount Meru, the sacred centre of the universe and the abode of the gods. The temple's elevated position reinforces this symbolism. Inscriptions and architectural details help researchers understand its development and the support it received from Khmer rulers.

UNESCO World Heritage

The temple was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2008 in recognition of its architectural quality, carved decoration and exceptional relationship with the surrounding landscape. Its remote location helped preserve many features, although weathering, erosion and vegetation continue to pose conservation challenges.

Visiting Preah Vihear

Visitors can explore the entrance pavilions, stone stairways, carved details and panoramic viewpoints. Because the temple lies in a remote border region, access conditions and local guidance should be checked before travelling. Visitors should remain on permitted routes and help protect the ancient masonry.
