The Museum of Fine Arts in Ghent (Museum voor Schone Kunsten Gent, MSK) is one of Belgium’s oldest art museums. Founded in 1798, before the creation of the modern Belgian state, it opened to the public in 1802. Today, it occupies a monumental building on the edge of Citadel Park and houses European artworks created over several centuries.
The collection contains around 20,000 works, including Old Master paintings, art by Belgian artists of the 19th and 20th centuries, drawings, prints and sculptures. The displays offer an overview of changing artistic styles from the Middle Ages to the present day.
History of the museum
The collection began to take shape in the late 18th century and grew through acquisitions and donations. During the 19th century, the museum expanded its holdings of Belgian and European art. Architect Charles van Rysselberghe designed a dedicated building for the growing collection, and the museum moved into it in 1904.
The spacious galleries and natural light create a pleasant setting for viewing paintings and sculptures. Today, the collection covers a broad range of periods and movements in European art.
Famous artworks and artists
Notable works include Christ Carrying the Cross, associated with Hieronymus Bosch, and Jupiter and Antiope by the Flemish painter Anthony van Dyck. The museum also presents works representing the Flemish painting tradition and artists from different periods.
Art from the 19th and first half of the 20th century has a particularly important place in the collection. Visitors can discover works by James Ensor, Émile Claus, George Minne, Théo van Rysselberghe and other artists. Their work illustrates developments in realism, Impressionism, symbolism and modernism.
Exhibitions and visiting
Alongside its permanent displays, the MSK organizes temporary exhibitions that combine works from its own collection with loans from other institutions. These exhibitions offer new perspectives on artistic movements and introduce visitors to lesser-known aspects of art history.
The museum is located beside Citadel Park, making it easy to combine a visit with a walk through the green spaces of Ghent. Check the official website before travelling for current opening hours, gallery access and temporary exhibition details.
The Museum of Fine Arts in Ghent is an excellent destination for anyone interested in Belgian culture and the history of European painting. Its collection brings together different periods and artistic approaches, revealing how artists’ techniques and subjects have changed over the centuries.
