History of creation

The Ghent Design Museum was established on the basis of one well-known organization of the city of Ghent, the Society of Decorative Arts, which was founded in the early 20th century. Later, the Ghent Design Museum was opened in this house, the interiors of which still preserve the foundations of those magnificent structures. In the very middle of the 20th century, the museum underwent extensive restoration, during which new architectural changes were made, and the neighboring house opposite was purchased, since such a large collection needed a larger area and brighter rooms.
