Recoleta Cemetery
Recoleta Cemetery is one of the three tourist attractions of Buenos Aires. Impressive way of burial: coffins with the departed do not bury in the ground, but place above the surface. A crypt is installed above the coffin, which looks like a house. In such a « house » several people are buried, members of the same family – a kind of « communal apartment » for the departed. Due to the abundance of crypt- « houses » the cemetery looks like a fantastic city located in a small area. There are more than 5 thousand cryptings with buried tens of thousands of departed. More than 90 of them belong to national monuments. Under the influence of time, coffins are destroyed, revealing the remains. A very specific sight!
The first burials are dated to the end of the 19th century. The cemetery, located on the territory of the former monastery of the Franciscan order, was intended for the elite. The slings surprise the embodied architectural fantasies, the walls depict scenes both from the real life of the departed and fictional. Without an experienced guide, going to the cemetery will take a long time and give little information. It is worth preparing for it, having thought through the plan of the burials of interest in advance. Recoleta can be visited by anyone.
Evita Peron
The Recoleta cemetery is famous for its legends. An interesting and often mysterious story is associated with each burial. Here lies the mysterious Evita Peron – second wife of the Argentine dictator Juan Peron. There are still various rumors about the young years of beauty – from the dirtiest to the more democratic. She earned the respect and honor of the Argentines with her generosity, and for women she achieved suffrage. Beauty died of cancer in 1952, her husband ordered the body to be embalmed.
Rufina Kambaseres
It is interesting to see the burial of Rufina Kambaseres. The sculpture of a young girl adorns the entrance to the crypt. Rufina – daughter of Argentinean writer and ballerina. After the death of her father, the girl became more and more locked in herself. The girl’s mother was loved by the future president of Argentina, Hipolito Irigoen. This exacerbated the situation, and at the age of 19 Rufina died. She was buried, and a few days later the caretaker in horror saw that the lid of the coffin was open, and Rufin was lying nearby. It turned out that she had a catalepsy attack ( something like a lethargic sleep ) when she was mistaken for the deceased. Waking up, she hardly opened the lid, but could not get out – the crypt was locked, and there was no one in the Recoleta cemetery. This time, the girl really died of a heart attack. For Rufina, they put a separate crypt next to the family.
Dorego Ortiz Basualdo Family
The largest burial site is forced by the Dorego Ortiz Basualdo family. The crypt was created by the architect from France, Louis Dubois, at the beginning of the last century. The then-right president forbade the bury of the departed in church chapels. Therefore, the crypt of the family that opposed the decision was made in the form of a chapel with many mysterious signs and symbols.
