Nahuel Huapi National Park

Nahuel Huapi National Park is one of Argentina's best-known protected areas, located in northern Patagonia at the foothills of the Andes. It spans mountains, forests, rivers and lakes across Río Negro and Neuquén provinces. Its most recognizable feature is Lake Nahuel Huapi, with its winding shoreline, wooded islands and mountain panoramas.

History of the national park

The area's conservation history began in 1903, when Argentine explorer and naturalist Francisco Pascasio Moreno donated land near Lake Nahuel Huapi to the national government. The Southern National Park was established in 1922, and Nahuel Huapi National Park was formally created by law in 1934.

Lake Nahuel Huapi and mountain scenery

Lake Nahuel Huapi is the centerpiece of the park. Its irregular shoreline forms bays and peninsulas, while the surrounding mountains and forests are reflected in the water. Several islands lie within the lake, and organized boat trips provide access to selected destinations.

Forests and plant life

Moist Andean forests feature coihue, lenga and ñire trees, characteristic of Patagonia. At higher elevations, forests give way to low shrubs and grasses adapted to cold winds and a short growing season. Farther east, woodland gradually transitions into Patagonian steppe.

Wildlife in Nahuel Huapi

The park is home to pumas, guanacos, pudú deer, Andean foxes and condors. One of its emblematic species is the southern river otter, known locally as the huillín. Visitors should watch wildlife from a respectful distance and avoid feeding animals.

Things to do in the park

There are short walking trails, longer hiking routes and viewpoints overlooking the mountains and forests. Depending on the location and regulations, visitors can also enjoy boat trips, kayaking, permitted fishing and birdwatching. San Carlos de Bariloche is a convenient base for exploring the region.

Best time to visit

For most walks and hikes, the most convenient period is roughly November to April, from late spring through summer and early autumn in the Southern Hemisphere. Winter may bring snowfall and restrictions on some roads and trails.

Getting to the park

San Carlos de Bariloche and Villa La Angostura are the main gateways. Bariloche can be reached by air or by road from other Argentine cities. Check road conditions, access requirements and current trail information before travelling.

Why visit Nahuel Huapi National Park

Nahuel Huapi showcases the variety of Argentine Patagonia, from glacial lakes and mountain peaks to dense forests, waterfalls and open steppe. Visitors can choose a peaceful lakeside walk or a demanding trek through the Andes.
