Mount Fitz Roy
Mount Fitzroy is located in Patagonia, an area that borders Chile and Argentina. This mountain has other names: Cerro Chalten, as well as Cerro Fitzroy. At the same time, its second name: "Chalten" in the Tehuelche language means "smoking mountain", which is quite suitable for Fitzroy Peak due to the fact that the peak is almost constantly shrouded in clouds, very similar to smoke, from the side.
The history of climbing Fitzroy Peak
The first traveler to see and describe the peak is Francisco Moreno, who did it in March 1877. It was he who decided to ignore the name "Chalten", invented by the aborigines, and gave the peak a new name, immortalizing Robert Fitzroy, who explored Patagonia. But the history of its conquest is very difficult, until the middle of the 20th century, no one could curb this peak, although many climbers tried to do so, who were attracted to it as if by a real magnet. Mount Fitzroy was conquered by man only in 1952, when two Frenchmen, Guido Magnone and Lionel Terrai, climbed to its top. After that, the mountain was conquered many more times, but not enough for the summit of such a height. This is due to the fact that many sections of the mountain are granite cliffs, and also because of the weather conditions under which Fitzroy Peak can be conquered. Most of the successful conquests of the peak were made immediately after the French, until the 1960s.
Information for tourists
According to the stories of those who have visited the foot of the mountain at least once, it is never forgotten, striking others with its beauty and regal majesty. Clouds are constantly moving in and out of the peak, leaving a light haze. The most popular tourist routes are the outbound routes from El Chalten. In addition to the main peak, there are peaks on the mountain that are easier to climb. Such simpler ascents attract the least ambitious climbers, who, having conquered "their Fitzroy peak", can enjoy the view of the inaccessible peak.
In addition, when visiting Fitzroy Peak, it must be borne in mind that it is located in Los Glaciares National Park, which has a paid entrance. But you no longer need to pay for permission to climb the mountain, although you will also need to get it.
The most suitable time to climb Mount Fitzroy is December-February, when summer begins in the southern hemisphere. It is during this period that the weather in the area of the peak is more or less established, and the expectation of suitable weather is significantly reduced than in other months.
