Three Best Views of Rio de Janeiro
Rio is surrounded by mountains and the ocean, so the city looks best from above. Here are three places with the most famous views.
Corcovado and the Christ Statue
The statue of Christ the Redeemer stands on top of Corcovado mountain above the city. From here you can see the bay, beaches and hills, but clouds sometimes cover both the statue and the view.

Sugarloaf Mountain
This is a rocky hill at the entrance to the bay, reached by cable cars. Many people come in the late afternoon to watch the city light up.

Ipanema and Arpoador Rock
The rock at the edge of Ipanema beach is considered a good spot for sunset. By tradition, people gather here in the evening and see off the sun with applause.

Tips for the Viewpoints
- Check the weather and visibility before you go: on cloudy days the view can be blocked
- Arrive early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the biggest queues
- Look after your belongings and phone, and be alert in crowded places
- Bring water, a hat and sunscreen
Important: tickets, transport schedules and visiting rules change. Check current information on official websites before your trip and read safety recommendations in advance.
Bottom Line
Rio is best seen from above, but visibility depends on the weather. Leave a spare day, and your chances of seeing the city in all its glory will rise.
